Healing Trauma with God: A Faith-Based Path to Restoration and Wholeness

Before diving into the healing process, it’s essential to understand trauma. Trauma isn't just a mental or emotional condition—it lives in our bodies, impacting our nervous systems, health, relationships, and sense of self-worth. As a certified integrative trauma coach, I’ve seen that when trauma is left unaddressed, it not only affects our lives but can also create barriers to experiencing God’s love and peace fully.
But God didn’t create us to live in constant suffering. In Scripture, we see time and again that healing is at the heart of God's mission: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3). This verse reflects the promise of healing and peace that is available to each of us. Trauma healing with God offers a path not just to cope with, but to transform and transcend past hurts.
Step 1: Removing Emotional Baggage Through Surrender
One of the most crucial steps in healing is surrendering the burdens we carry. Trauma often leaves us with deeply embedded pain—emotions like resentment, guilt, and shame. In my High Level Life Coaching Method™, the first step is to help clients identify these wound behaviors. Through prayer and mindful reflection, ask God to reveal the root of your pain. Release these emotions to Him and let go of the weights holding you back.
This step aligns with Biblical teachings on surrender and release. Jesus says in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” By turning these burdens over to God, you create space for healing and peace.
Step 2: Regulating the Nervous System with Faith and Somatic Practices
Trauma often disrupts our body’s natural rhythm, causing us to feel anxious, on edge, or even emotionally numb. As a certified integrative trauma coach and licensed minister (Christian Counselor), I help individuals reconnect with their bodies through mindful and breathing techniques. When combined with faith, these practices are even more powerful.
-
Prayer and Breathwork: Begin your healing sessions with prayer. Ask God to guide your practice and calm your mind. Incorporating gentle breathing exercises helps regulate the nervous system and allows you to invite the Holy Spirit into your heart. Imagine God’s love and healing power flowing through each breath you take, calming and restoring your body.
-
Meditation on Scripture: Another helpful tool is meditating on verses that resonate with healing, forgiveness, and God’s love. Phrases like “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10) provide a grounding focus that helps calm your nervous system and connect you to divine peace.
Step 3: Resolving Unresolved Pain Through Confession and Forgiveness
Unresolved pain often festers into bitterness, resentment, or even feelings of unworthiness. With God, however, we can confess and release these pains. This step, often referred to as “confession and forgiveness,” is transformative. Ask God for the strength to confront these wounds, whether they stem from childhood, past relationships, or personal failures.
I guide my clients through confession and forgiveness exercises, allowing them to process emotions deeply and fully. As you walk this path, remember that Jesus Himself taught us to forgive others and ourselves. In Ephesians 4:31-32, we’re reminded, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
Step 4: Restoring Self-Worth Through God’s Love
Trauma often damages our self-worth, leaving us feeling unlovable or broken. To truly heal, we need to restore our self-image and recognize our worth as beloved children of God. Through a combination of somatic experiencing and reflective prayer, you can reconnect with the love that God has for you.
-
Affirmations of God’s Love: Use affirmations rooted in scripture to rebuild your sense of worth. Remind yourself, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14).
-
Journaling with God’s Guidance: As you work through self-worth exercises, journal your thoughts and feelings, inviting God’s insight into each entry. This practice reinforces your relationship with God and brings clarity and strength.
Step 5: Rewiring Thought Patterns with God’s Truth
Our thought patterns shape how we view ourselves and the world. Trauma can distort these patterns, filling our minds with negativity, fear, and doubt. But neuroplasticity research shows that with intentional practice, we can rewire these thoughts—and faith can be the catalyst.
I use neuroplasticity techniques with my clients to replace negative thinking with healthier, productive patterns. Incorporating God’s word into this step is essential. Replace negative beliefs with truths from Scripture. For example, when feeling unworthy, repeat, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
- Visualizing God’s Peace: Visualization is a powerful technique for rewiring our minds. Imagine God’s light filling you, surrounding each painful memory and thought. With practice, you’ll be able to shift from fear-based thinking to faith-based resilience.
